FWF Weller Days are yacht/boat/Vessel outings where private or commercial owners donate their time, vessel and crew for a therapeutic day out on the water for people with life threatening illnesses, disabilities, youth at risk, or others with special needs.

FWF Goes Fishing!

Two sharks, grouper, snapper, spot fish and more! True Fish Stories – there were witnesses!

FWF participants go fishing, in addition to the usual therapeutic cruising and accessible sailing!

Last Friday, FWF hosted the Southwest Florida Council of the Blind and took some of their members fishing aboard two local Sports Fishing Commercial Vessels, the Dalis and the Dalis II. (Boat and Crew time donated by owners, Gene and Paul Luciano).

And, in June, FWF will share in the efforts of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Fishing Tournament in Ft. Lauderdale and will host another kids’ Fishing Tournament n Naples.

Fish Stories Abound!

Our Chaperone on the FWF Weller Day Fishing outing - 4/20/12

FWF Story – Blind Folks Go Fishing!

Imagine a young man who has very limited sight, feeling the tug at the end of a fishing pole. The excitement and thrill of the fight of a six foot shark! That is just one situation that occurred the other morning, when Freedom Waters Foundation (FWF) hosted a morning of fishing for members of the Southwest Florida Council of the Blind, aboard the Sport Fishing Vessels, Dalis and Dalis II, which use of the boats and crew were donated for this outing by their owners, Gene and Paul Luciano.

Kris Scheppe, a young man who is visually impaired and has limited sight and no peripheral vision had sailed with FWF, in the accessible sailing regatta last month and asked if there was a way to get some of visually impaired folks fishing. FWF Founder, Debra Frenkel replied, “Sure, let’s do it. You coordinate the participants and FWF will do the rest.” (He is also the one who had the excitement of pulling the shark closer and closer to the boat…..until the shark broke the line and got away. True story, not just your fish story…it was witnessed.)

On, April 20, it all came together. Kris and 7 other members/volunteers from the SWFL Council of the Blind met down at the City Docks and boarded the Dalis and Dalis II Sports Fishing Vessels. Boats Owner, Gene Luciano, who generously donated this trip of service was there to welcome everyone. The boats’ crew and FWF volunteers carefully guided all participants onto the boats and off they went to go fish!

13 miles out, the boats stopped, the poles were baited and handed to each participant. It seemed that the hooks had just hit the water and the smiles of excitement were all ready occurring and lines were tightened by the biting fish. They felt their lines tug and slowly, but surely reeled their fish in. After a good hour or so of fishing, having brought in many: grouper, snapper, spot tail, and another little shark, it was time to pull up anchor and head back to the docks.

Back on the docks, the fish stories started to fly from participants from one boat to the other. It was apparent everyone had a great time. The Crew of the Dalis and Dalis II couldn’t have been more hospitable, fun and professional.

It was a great day for all and some even went home with dinner in one hand, cane in the other, and all left with a smile across their face.

FWF Story – from a Mom!

I’m a firm believer that people are put in our paths for a special reason. FWF was put in not only my path, but my sons path and I am truly grateful for that. I met this incredible group of people through chance – their photographer for an event cancelled and I was called to fill in. Not a bad gig – considering it was on a yacht and any occasion to dress up is just fine by me. By the end of the night I had a pretty good idea of what FWF did and was intrigued and wanted to get more involved. It started out with a few trips to take pictures of the kids and their families enjoying a day on the water…after one trip, I was hooked. I love the kids and the pure joy they get out of a day on the water…for some, this is the first time they have ever been on a boat. But, I also connect with the families and for them to just be able to escape for a few hours from the day-to-day challenges they face, is priceless. These are just happy, carefree, fun days for all.

An added bonus was that Jake, my son also became involved and loves FWF as much as I do. Jake was involved in an accident a year ago and had been pretty lost as far as his future was concerned. On the first trip he took, he met John Weller and immediately connected. This incredible man took him under his wing and opened doors to Jake that he had never imagined were possible before. Jake has no relationship with his father and the guidance that John, Jim, Andrew and many other have shown him has changed Jake in a way that is hard for me to put into words. Picture a kid with long dreadlocks, no idea of what he wanted to do with his life, he wasn’t taking care of himself mentally or physically, and totally lacked motivation. Now picture him today…..clean cut, working out every day, eating healthy, talking about his career, and actually getting out of bed every day happy to have a job and a purpose. FWF has completely give Jake back his life.

Everyone is put in our path for a reason….FWF has made both Jake and I better people and we are forever part of this wonderful family.

It’s Spring and it certainly seems that much is “Springing” in new for Freedom Waters Foundation too! FWF has some new boat participants in Ft. Lauderdale; new boat trips; new donations; new events coming up; and lots of new stories/memories and friends!

Community Foundation of Collier County – Awarded Freedom Waters Foundation a $400 grant to attend “The Fundraising School: Principles and Techniques of Fundraising” 4 day workshop! Thank you Community Foundation of Collier County!
Donn Schulte, of American Marine Fuel donated another $1000 to FWF! Thank you, Donn for all you do for FWF!
Donn Schulte and Dorothy Wade, from the Naples area are now on the FWF Board of Directors, making the Board truly representative of the bi-coastal work that FWF does!
Fish Florida has donated 125 Fishing Poles and Tackle boxes for the children who will be participating in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Fishing Tournaments on both coasts of Florida. This is the second year that FWF has received such a wonderful gift for the children from Fish Florida! Thank you!

Helping Hands on and off the Water!

Jake, the young man on the right in the photo above, came to FWF through his Mom who is a volunteer/photographer for FWF. He has gone through some hard times and was seeking a way to get into something new and exciting and to begin a career. He loves being outside and loves boats.

He and his Mom did a Weller Day for children with cancer with FWF- volunteering their time. Jake talked to John Weller, FWF Co-founder said that he was interested in getting into the boating business. Within days, John had Jake on a job cleaning boats with another close FWF friend. Jake has taken to his new job and responsibilities with enthusiasm and hard work and is growing and learning immensely. He and his Mom are continuing to volunteer for FWF, and are already well entrenched in the FWF family!

Ron McTighe, FWF Board Member volunteering at the Dania Beach Marine Flea Market at the FWF Booths - Ron has successfully gotten the donated space at the Marine Flea Market and at USA Storage on Andrews, in Ft. Lauderdale, both who have donated space to FWF for the past four years! Thank you, Ron!

In the picture above, a young man who appears to be in his twenties with a very young mental capacity, dependent on his wheelchair and under total care, was full of smiles and sounds of excitement of the new sensations of feeling the air on his face, the movement of the boat, and the water beneath him. Observers, like FWF volunteers and his caretakers, knew that he was enjoying and benefitting from that experience. A special day on the water for all who were there to share. Thank you Cruise Naples for your incredible, ongoing support in making this possible!

Thank you for allowing my son the opportunity to participate in the March 6 cruise with LARC. Although he is non-verbal, he does communicate. He so obviously throughly delighted being out on the boat, watching the sun sparkling on the water, the dolphins wandering through the waves and just soaking up the day. It was such a treat for him and I appreciate that you would provide him with this outing, this adventure for him. (Thank you Cruise Naples for helping us make this possible.)

GREAT NEWS! – FWF Co-Founders, YachtWorld Foundation 2011 YachtWorld Heroes

John Weller (5 time cancer survivor and 30+ year Yacht Broker) and Debra Frenkel (Social Worker), Co-Founders of the charity, Freedom Waters Foundation were announced as one of the YachtWorld Foundation’s 2011 YachtWorld Heroes, at the Miami International Boat Show’s opening breakfast, on 2/16/12, lending this local charity- international recognition for service to others.

The Yachtworld Foundation’s (www.yachtworldfoundation.com) mission is to further the knowledge and protection of the world’s oceans. YachtWorld Heroes are individuals and organizations that have made a significant difference in the promotion and protection of the marine habitat, have made a significant contribution to the education and enjoyment of it by others or a marine industry professional who is changing the world. Nominated by marine industry colleagues, personal friends and acquaintances whose lives have been impacted by their work.

Andrew Cilla, owner of Luke Brown Yachts nominated John and Debra for their work with Freedom Waters Foundation.

The other YachtWorld Heroes for 2011 announced along with Freedom Waters Foundation are: Mark Schrader of Around the Americas, Alex Braden of Encompass, The U.S. Coast Guard. And, Sea Keepers is 2011 YachtWorld Foundation beneficiary. www.yachtworldfoundation.com

Yacht owners share their love and respect for the water by donating their: time, energy, knowledge and the use of their vessels for boat outings for children and adults with cancer, other life threatening illnesses, disabilities, and other special needs. Weller Days named in honor of John Weller, Co-Founder, Yacht Broker, 5 time cancer survivor!

FWF serves a number of referrals from: local Hospitals, Social Service Agencies and other organizations/partnerships in the Southwest and Southeast areas of Florida, and word of mouth!
